Games in Hebrew

Playing games in Hebrew is not only fun, but also an excellent way to improve your fluency in the language and confidence in yourself. Go ahead, give these games a try!

Rules

Play as usual, but use Hebrew exclusively for the following actions:

  • Call out the name of the chess piece in Hebrew before you move it.
  • Every so often, call out: “Come on!”, “Come on already!”, or “Wellll…” in Hebrew. Any combination of one, two, or all the three listed terms works.
For example, try: “!נו!” ,”יאללה, נו כבר!” ,”יאללה”, and other variations.
  • From time to time, ask in Hebrew: “Is it my turn?”, or “Your turn?”—as if you don’t remember.
  • When asked a question, respond in Hebrew.

When a player forgets to use Hebrew for these actions, they contribute $1 to the “Hebrew Challenge” jar.

  • After rolling the dice, instead of calculating and advancing straight to your landing spot, “walk” your pawn over while counting the spaces aloud in Hebrew.
  • When asked a question, respond in Hebrew.

Players pay $10 to the bank when they use English to communicate any of the above.

Sorry game

Rules

This game that is enjoyed around the world is easily played in Hebrew. A minimum of two players are needed. One player, the stander (העומד) stands against a tree, wall or any tall object. With eyes closed, the stander counts loudly up to 10. While the stander counts, all other players go and hide within the agreed-upon boundaries. When the counting is finished, the stander goes to search for the other players. When a player is found, the stander runs back to the counting spot, touches it, shouts “1, 2, 3!” and also shouts the name of the found player. The stander then goes to find the remaining players…

Hide & Seek game

Rules

In this game for two people, each player decides and chooses from 3 possible hand shapes:

When both players are ready, they chant together (in Hebrew!) and then reveal their hands. The winner is determined per the rules shown in the diagram above. If both players chose the same shape, no winner is declared, and the game is repeated.

Rock-Paper-Scissors game

Rules

One of the players hides an object and the others try to locate it by moving from place to place and listening to feedback from the hider. The hider is limited to using descriptors that illustrate the object’s “temperature.” In this game, the further you are from the object, the “colder” it is, and the closer you are to the object, the “hotter” it is. The object’s location is “hot” as it can be. T. For example, if the object is hidden in the kitchen and you are searching the upstairs bedroom, then the hider will tell you it is “freezing.” When you get closer to the object, the hider will tell you it is getting “warmer,” and when you are very close to the object, it is “boiling.” It is up to the hider to choose the descriptors.

Hot-Cold game

Rules

This is a finger game, similar to This Little Piggy. In the game, a story is told and acted out by the narrator’s fingers on the listener’s arm. This is the story:

What you sayWhat it meansWhat you do

סבתא בישלה דייסה.

Grandma cooked hot cereal.
Swirl your pointer finger around and around the open palm of your family member’s cupped hand, as if you were stirring a pot.

נתנה לאבא,
נתנה לאמא,
נתנה לחנה,
נתנה ללוסי,

She gave [some] to __,
She gave [some] to __,
She gave
[some] to __,
She gave
[some] to __,
Stop stirring, name 4 close family members, and as you do so, use your hand to gently squeeze the tip of each of the family member’s 4 fingers.

וליצחק לא נשאר.

And there was not [or none] left for __.When you squeeze the tip of the family member’s 5th finger, say their name.

אז הלך, הלך, הלך, הלך, הלך, הלך, הלך, הלך, הלך

So he went, he went, he went, he went, he went, he went, he went, he wentUse your pointer and middle fingers to “walk” away from your family member’s palm, up their arm, in a playful, tickling manner.

ומצא!

And he found [some]!And now you tickle their armpit (or neck, or tummy) and the game ends in eruptions of laughter.
