Language Tree

Once upon a time there was Afroasiatic—a language and culture that gave rise to many others.

Scientists have reconstructed the existence of Afroasiatic by analyzing and comparing languages that descended from it. Use the following language tree to explore how Hebrew (coded in light blue) evolved from Afroasiatic (in navy). Follow the Semitic language branch (also in light blue) to find Hebrew and its sister Canaanite languages.
